Odyssey Marine loses case over Spanish sea salvage

The United States Supreme Court has declined to take an appeal by the salvage company Odyssey Marine Exploration over who has the rights to the ownership of the wreck of the Mercedes, which sank off the coast of Spain in 1804.

Odyssey Marine, a Florida-based company that salvaged the wreck in 2007, claimed rights to the discovery, which included silver and gold bullion. However Odyssey was ordered to return the precious cargo to Spain in February this year by a Florida court, which ruled that it had no claim to the treasure.

The case is now finally closed, the coins have already been returned to Spain and they will go on display in various museums.
