Cyclists who park their bikes illegally could soon be liable to a Dkk100 fine as part of a new package of proposals to regulate cycling in the Danish capital. Other measures include authorising city council employees to remove abandoned bikes, a faculty which is currently the province solely of the police. Other features of the Dkk75 million package include the creation of 2,300 more cycle parking spaces and of green-light priority bike routes and the widening of existing cycle paths. The proposals come in response to the clutter of old, abandoned and rusting bikes in city bike racks plus the spread of illegal parking, obstructing pavements around the capital. Nearly 60 per cent of Copenhageners cycle to work every day.
