A major project to upgrade Oxford High Street is under way and works should be completed by the beginning of August 2006. The upgrade includes widening the footpaths, which are to repaved with Yorkstone, resurfacing of the road and removal of the excess clutter of signs and street furniture. During the works pedestrians will continue to have access to individual shops and the Covered Market entrances and permitted traffic will use narrow lanes through the works area. Bus stops are to be relocated and an advisory cycle route will be signposted to avoid the road-works. Parking of cars, taxis and on-street trading will be suspended for the duration of the work. Detailed information on the six phases of the project is available on the Oxfordshire website www.oxfordshire.gov.uk.
