The over 60s in Oxford will be able to travel free on public transport as from April 2006. However, it is still not clear how this new scheme will be funded. One of the problems is calculating just how many extra trips the over 60s will be taking as a result of the introduction of free travel. The citys two main bus companies, Stagecoach and Oxford Bus Company, are still hoping they will have financial help from the city council. At present Oxford city council subsidises fares for the over 60s to the tune of 1.1m per annum, but with the introduction of free tickets for the over 60s the cost could double.
