Dublins Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) has announced plans to transform the area around the historic Custom House into a cultural and entertainment space. Often considered architecturally the most important building in Dublin, the Gandon-designed Custom House (1791) on the banks of the Liffey would become a focus for outdoor arts performances, while Georges Quay would be developed as a public arena from which to view firework displays and other events. The DDDA is currently seeking submissions from local and international architects and landscape designers for the development of the area, including the quayside pathway in front of the Custom House. This area has recently come under fire for being a haven for drug dealers and antisocial behaviour.
