Madrid is one of the few European capitals along with Helsinki, Stockholm and Budapest participating in the In town without my car day as part of the European Mobility Week 2006 from 16-22 September. Following the classification of 2005 as Year of Disasters by the World Meteorological Organisation, the theme of this years campaign for sustainable mobility is climate change. Awareness-raising activities concerning the environment, pollution and energy saving are to take place across the capital, culminating in the car-free day on 22 September. The event is promoted and financed by the European Commissions Environment Directorate-General.
