Brussels airport flight paths to change again

Changes made in February 2014 to the flight plans for Brussels airport must now be re-adpated thanks to a Brussels court order.

The unpopular Wathelet plan, named after the minister for mobility, has been contested by the Brussels regional government on the grounds that it increased the number of people in the city effected by the noise of aircraft traffic.

Claiming that 400,000 people were now suffering from airport noise instead of the previous 150,00, it took its case to court and won. The court has now given the Beglium state three months to change the Wathelet flight plan or face a fine of €50,000 a day.

This could mean moving some flights from Brussels airport, northeast of the city, to Liège in the southeast or Charleroi to the south of Brussels.
